Hello October!

It’s pumpkin time!

Autumn is here; the cooler air and changing light naturally encourage a slower pace, as we trade the vibrancy of summer for the calm of cozy autumn days. The abundance of root vegetables like squashes, potatoes, and carrots is perfect for comforting, hearty meals. It’s a season that invites us to appreciate the warmth of home—whether that's in the kitchen trying new recipes, on a peaceful country walk surrounded by the vibrant autumn leaves, or wrapped up with a good book as the evenings draw in.

Autumn is the season of cozy sophistication, where cool summer styling moves from the light and brights and becomes all about layering textures, adding in warmer richer tones, and creating effortless elegance. Jewellery in warm, autumnal shades elevates any outfit. Imagine wrapping yourself in luxurious chunky knits and scarves, with chunky yellow gold rings, chains or earrings that catch the late afternoon sunlight paired with sleek leather boots in deep browns or chestnut. Add a tailored wool coat, in hues like forest green or charcoal grey, to create that polished yet relaxed look.

Colour-rich gems like deep emerald greens, warm amber oranges, or burgundy wine-reds compliment the aesthetic while rose gold or two-tone precious metals add a subtle, romantic contrast against soft, textured fabrics like cashmere or tweed to give a look of effortless charm and reflect the golden leaves and harvest season. The key is combining comfort with a touch of elegance and embracing the earthy tones of nature in your style. For jewellery inspiration we’ve put together an autumn style guide below so keep reading!

Gold prices increase to new record levels and are predicted to hit the 3000 USD mark by 2025.

Gold prices over the last three years

Gold has long been considered a safe haven during uncertain times, and its price has been steadily climbing for years. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic sparked record spikes in gold prices as uncertainty gripped the global economy. Since then, the value of gold has continued to rise, and experts predict it could reach new all-time highs, with estimates of $3,000 per ounce by 2025.

This upward trend presents both opportunities and challenges for consumers, especially those considering purchasing or selling gold jewellery, such as engagement rings or wedding bands. With prices up by approximately £400 over the past year, now may be an opportune time to make those purchases before the price climbs even higher.

Why Now Might Be the Time to Buy Gold Jewellery

For anyone planning to buy gold jewellery, whether for special occasions like engagements and weddings or as an investment, purchasing now could save you money in the long term. As gold prices continue to climb, jewellery items could become significantly more expensive in the coming years.

What to Do With Old Gold Jewellery

If you have old gold jewellery or items you no longer wear, now could be a great time to consider selling or repurposing them. The high price of gold means you could get more for your unwanted pieces. Whether you decide to sell scrap gold, trade it in for new items, or melt it down for a custom-designed piece, you’re likely to benefit from current market conditions.

Review Your Insurance Policies and Update Valuations

Rising gold prices also mean you may need to revisit your home or contents insurance policies. Many people don’t realise that their gold jewellery, particularly valuable items like engagement rings or family heirlooms, may be underinsured. If the value of your gold items has increased, it’s essential to get updated valuations and ensure your insurance coverage reflects the current market price.

Failing to update your policy could leave you with a significant gap in coverage if your items are lost, stolen, or damaged.

So what or who is driving the gold prices?

Generally, and explained in very basic terms, whenever there is uncertainty, whether economically, politically or socially, people will lose faith in physical currencies and turn to commodities like gold that always hold its value. The reason behind this thinking is if currencies, physical or digital, crashed then people could use gold to buy things or trade with. This naturally drives prices higher as demand increases. When the economy or political scene stabilises and things are calmer and feel more under control people will return to normal spending and stop buying gold which then results in the gold price going down. Looking at shorter time frames gold prices will fluctuate but over a longer period we can see that gold continues to climb. The following quote is taken from a market reporter at Kitco who explains what is currently driving gold prices:

News from the team:

Look out for some fun Halloween surprises inside our workshop and on our Instagram near the end of the month! ;-) It’s going to be spooktacular!

From the bench:

Following on from our last interview with head goldsmith Dimitrios, it is time to meet our stone setter Recto! Stone setting is the art of securely setting or attaching gemstones into jewellery which takes skill, precision, a steady hand and many years of experience! Often they will be goldsmiths and then have specialised as it is important to know how the metals work and how jewellery is constructed in order to know how to set stones properly and securely.

Lindsay Graver

  • Definitely the Lindsay graver! It’s a game changer! Before all the ornate engraving work had to be done by hand pushing the metal. Now this amazing but expensive little tool allows us to create beautiful work in half the time.

  • June 2020, I worked on a really interesting ring design. It was unusual and totally different. I had to set stones in a band; they were kite-shaped diamonds with a large centre round diamond. It was just something away from the mainstream of what we always get asked for and brightened up my day!

  • I do what I love and love what I do! I take pride in setting beautiful stones. It’s not about the end result. For me it is the process, the finesse and working on something until it is absolutely perfect. We don’t cut corners here and we know that when a customer wears a piece we have created it is of the highest quality and people will admire it. We know every detail and every part has been meticulously polished and worked on and we take pride in that.

  • For sure, emerald. There are so many things going on inside an emerald when it is a natural. You see the crystal growth patterns and that stunning green colour is vibrant and just beautiful. It is brittle and you have to be so careful setting it. Practice, trial and error and years of experience have taught me how to handle them but you still have to be so careful. There is always a nervous moment when handling emeralds but you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment, (maybe relief, too!) when you finish setting emeralds and they are still in one piece!

Be inspired to spice up your look this pumpkin season— here is your autumn jewellery style guide:

  • Golden Hour: Yellow Gold

We love quiet understated luxury like chunky gold chains, stackable rings, and classic hoops. Oversized pieces that stand out against heavier fabrics will make bold statements asserting confidence and oozing classic chic. Bask in the golden glow of autumn and sunsets shining on harvest fields with gorgeous buttery yellow gold and enjoy the pop of warmth in the cooler temperatures.

  • Autumn Glow: Jewel Tones for the Season

Mimic the changing leaves and autumn sunsets in your style by adorning outfits with colourful gemstone jewellery such as: emerald greens, colourful sapphires, forest green and reddish-pink tourmalines, bright rubies, wine-red garnets, and warm citrines.

  • Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice: Cozy romance

Fall in love with the soft romance of rose gold and blush gems. Think pink tourmalines, fuchsia pink sapphires, morganites and soft rose gold metals. Add in hammered gold bands, and stones in earthy tones like amber, topaz, and orange sapphires for that added spice. Perfect for autumn weddings, work days or cozy date nights in.

  • Birthstone of the Month: Opal & Tourmaline

Celebrate October birthdays with the mesmerizing hues of opal and tourmaline—each stone unique. With their vibrant play of colour opals encompass both cool and warm colours with many hues of base colour and make a gorgeous transitional piece from summer to autumn. Tourmalines come in a variety of shades and colours from warm teals, forest greens to soft raspberry pinks reflecting those earthy rich natural colours. Curious about opals and tourmaline? • Two-Tone Metals: Mixing Warm and Cool

Combine the warmth of yellow gold with the cool elegance of white gold, creating a dynamic, modern look. This is a great way to transition between seasons whether from summer to autumn or autumn to winter. Try wearing a Russian tricolour ring on the pinkie finger to mix your metals!

  • Halloween Glam: Dark and Dramatic

Witchy and wonderful: Get ready for Halloween with jewellery that’s more treat than trick! Add in darker mysterious pieces such as black diamonds, onyx, dark amethysts and purple sapphires, blood-red garnets or stones with greenish gunmetal accents. Perfect for a sophisticated Halloween look. Check out our halloween article coming out on October 1st for more jewellery ideas for dressing up your costumes! Fancy diving into the dark side of gems?
